“Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, fellow members of the motion picture industry and honored guests. This is one of the happiest moments of my life, and I want to thank each one of you who had a part in selecting me for one of the awards for your kindness.

It has made me feel very, very humble and I shall always hold it as a beacon for anything I may be able to do in the future. I sincerely hope I shall always be a credit to my race and to the motion picture industry.

My heart is too full to tell you just how I feel. And may I say thank you and God bless you.”

(Hattie McDaniel)

I could not introduce you to the tour of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles without mentioning one of the protagonists of the area of the museum dedicated to Exceptional Women who made a difference in the Motion Picture, Hattie McDaniel. In the exhibition you will find a tribute to Italian actress Sofia Loren, too.

Hattie held this speech – very strong words to accept in some passages for us, today – when she received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1940 for her unforgettable performance of Mami in Gone with the Wind.

She was the first African American woman to win the coveted award and in her own way, with grace and elegance, she paved the way for a small, big revolution in the Motion Picture world.

Hattie’s story is just one among the many stories told at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

The stories of the cinema, its cult movies and all its characters.

Visit the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles: Stories of Cinema

“Since the world’s first commercial film screenings in 1895, movies have given us a window onto the world, expanding our viewpoints and opening our eyes to new wonders. They have captivated us like no other medium. Both short-form and feature-length movies provide us with entertainment, allow us to escape, and help us better understand ourselves and others.”

Stories of Cinema is the Academy Museum’s permanent and core exhibition. It spreads over three floors and numerous galleries, telling the incredible stories of moviemakers and movie directors, the works they create, and the impact their art has on the world. The exhibition is a journey through feature-length movies and documentaries as well as arts and movie sciences.

The museum is really big; it is difficult to be able to explore everything in a few hours. So, I point out – to optimize the times – the exhibition areas and the most important experiences, mainly between the fourth and third floor.

Always remember to get info about the temporary exhibition present at the time of your visit. The offer is always incredibly rich and varied.

While timeless in its romanticism and its craftsmanship, Casablanca is also inextricably linked to its production environment during the Second World War.

The gallery explores this historical context, including the influx of European emigrants who have contributed with their talents both in front and behind the camera, echoing the movie’s narrative themes.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles: Academy Awards History

The Academy Awards History is the exhibition space where the fascinating history of the Oscar is told, with clips and original costumes of the winners.

A virtual stage that will accompany you to the exhibition of the original statuettes left to the Academy on heritage by some winners. Among them, Clark Gable’s one for 1934 It Happened One Night.

I would like to point out that with a separate ticket – to buy when booking – you can live your Oscar experience.

What is it?

The chance to live the Oscar dream. I mean, to be transported into the Dolby Theater during the night of the Oscars, hear your name called, go on the stage, collect the award and receive a final video that captures everything.
