New England where to sleep: Griswold Inn, Essex, Connecticut

The Griswold Inn is located in the ancient Essex village, in Connecticut.

It is one of the last historic inns in America which has been working non-stop since 1776, a magic place where it really looks like time has frozen.

Stay overnight in its accommodations and have lunch at its old restaurant with typical dishes it means reviving the atmosphere of the old New England and find oneself on a small peninsula on the Connecticut River: tree-lined avenues, wooden vintage dwellings, colorful houses, lighthouses, sailing boats and history rich in anecdotes tied to the maritime trades of rum and tobacco.

New England where to sleep: Rose Island Lighthouse, Newport, Rhode Island

The Rose Island Lighthouse is one of the fewest historic Lighthouses in New England where it is possible to stay overnight.

It is located in an amazing position: on an island – Rose Island – in the heart of the Narragansett Bay, just right in front of Newport, Rhode Island. It was built in 1870 and it was used nonstop until 1970 when it was completely abandoned following the construction of the Newport Bridge. Then it was taken over by the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation which turned it into a museum with day and night guided tours by boat from Newport, and into an accommodation for lovers and tourists.

The best of New England: Rose Island Lighthouse, Newport, Rhode Island

Since it is a one-of-a-kind experience – sleeping inside a historic lighthouse on a New England island – and since it has got a limited number of accommodations, it is advisable to book tours and overnight stays well in advance.

On the Rose Island Lighthouse official website, you can find further info and the link to book.

New England where to sleep: Concord’s Colonial Inn, Concord, Massachusetts

The Concord’s Colonial Inn is a nice Country Inn located in the small Concord’s old town, Massachusetts.

It’s another historic inn of New England, working since 1716 which had a main role during the Revolutionary War when it was used as warehouse for weapons, as headquarters by the revolutionary people and as a hospital for the injured people. For this reason, it is the object of interest to the Ghost Hunters arriving from everywhere to inspect it.

The town where it is located – Concord – is a downright gem for history and literature lovers.

In fact, here there are several houses (and graves, in the near Sleepy Hollow cemetery) belonged to famous writers, for example the Orchard House, Louisa May Alcott’s house where she wrote and set “Little Women”.

New England where to sleep: Red Lion Inn, Stockbridge, Massachusetts

In the heart of the Berkshires, in Massachusetts, in the old and charming small town of Newport – made famous by the paintings of the great Norman Rockwell – rises one among the 6 Historic Inns of New England: The Red Lion Inn – in my opinion, one of the most beautiful historic inns in the United States for history, position, charm and insides.

A real local institution and a starting point to discover the idyllic and spectacular neighborhoods of Lenox, Pittsfield and Williamstown as far as reaching Deerfield and the Franklin County.

New England where to sleep: New Bedford Harbor Hotel, New Bedford, Massachusetts

The New Bedford Harbor Hotel in New Bedford, Massachusetts, is a really new Industrial hotel got by a building in Downtown dating back to the 1800s.

The accommodations are modern both in details and furniture. Breakfast, Wi-Fi and parking included.

The Hotel is located on the main artery of New Bedford downtown, Union street, literally just around the main attractions of the town: the New Bedford downtown – undisputed symbol of the whaling past of this maritime town – and the Seastreak Ferry Terminal, from where the ferries to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard leave.

New England where to sleep: Narragansett House, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

One of the tips I give more often about the subdivision of the overnight stays when planning a journey to New England, is to put a night in Martha’s Vineyard. It is a suggestive island off shore Cape Code, summer buen retiro of the American Middle Class, of several USA Presidents and famous characters.

Narragansett House, Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

To enjoy fully the essence of this so particular island, the ideal it would be to give oneself a night at one of the most historic and fascinating B&B in New England – the Narragansett House, in the Oak Bluffs lively community.

It is a wonderful Victorian dwelling, completely renewed inside, working form 1880. There are really many plus included: homemade breakfast with local products, Wi-Fi, accommodations furnished with taste and with any comforts, local events to take part into directly organized by the property. And even beach towels, yoga mattresses and picnic blankets always available at the reception.

It is located in the heart of Bar Harbor, a stone’s throw on foot from its lively Main Street and few kilometers far from the entrance of the Acadia National Park.

New England where to sleep: The White Birch Inn, North Conway, New Hampshire

Jim and Cat Pucci – the owners – will welcome you heartily. Making you feel at home immediately.

The White Birch Inn is one of those Country Inns where you want to come back. It happened to me and to many other people.

Try to imagine an old inn dating back to 1873 completely restored and cottage style furnished, located in the center of North Conway, in New Hampshire.

New England where to sleep: The Woodstocker B&B, Woodstock, Vermont

The Woodstocker is – in my opinion – one among the most beautiful B&B in New England.

For the building itself, got by a dwelling dating back to 1800, for the theme accommodations furnished with taste in full Vermonter style, for the welcome given by its really kind and careful owners, for the delicious breakfast with typical products (strictly local) of Vermont, for the snacks and the hot cookies served in the afternoon, for the tips about excursions and activities to do in the area. And – the icing on the cake – for the small town where it rises – the nice Woodstock – for its old general Store and for its 2 suggestive Covered Bridges.

Is it possible to find in the wonderful capital of Massachusetts – ideal leaving and arriving point for a road trip throughout New England – a charm accommodation? Maybe a historic dwelling, that isn’t a luxury hotel necessarily and that possibly is a central area, just around the corner of everything?

Sure it is! Do you know the Newbury Guest House in Back Bay?

New England where to sleep: Newbury Guest House, Boston, Massachusetts
